Permitted Uses of Databases, E-books and other E-resources

The Reg Erhardt Library licenses many e-resources (article databases, datasheets, e-books and more) for use by the SAIT community, meaning:

  • Currently enrolled students
  • Currently employed staff and faculty

Use of these resources is governed by licenses signed between the Library and our vendors.

The table below outlines common generally accepted uses of e-resources licensed by the Library.

Use by the SAIT community and "walk-in" users not affiliated with SAIT Polytechnic Remote use or access by those who are not currently members of the SAIT community
Printing or downloading a copy of an article Excessive printing or downloading (e.g. whole journal issues, whole books)
Using licensed material for research, instruction or educational purposes; including display of a single copy to a class using a projector or similar technology Commercial use, sale or distribution of licensed material
Sharing an article with a fellow member of the SAIT community Sharing material with others not affiliated with SAIT Polytechnic
Posting persistent links to licensed material into D2L, a class blog, email or similar document for use by members of the SAIT Community Posting articles, book chapters or whole works on personal websites, class wikis, D2L or similar platforms

E-Resources Icons

Additionally, the following icons may appear within descriptions of e-resources to further clarify permitted uses, where our licenses specify these uses.

Linking Allowed It is permissible to post persistent links to licensed material into D2L, a class blog, email or similar document for use by members of the SAIT Community.
Linking Not Allowed It is not permissible to distribute a persistent URL to a specific resource.
Copying Allowed It is permissible to reproduce an article, or similar portion of a longer resource, for distribution to a class of SAIT students.
Copying Not Allowed It is not permissible to reproduce a work, or portion thereof, for distribution to a class or other group.
ILL Allowed (Libraries Only) The content of this resource is available for Interlibrary Loan.
ILL Not Allowed (Libraries Only) The content of this resource is not available for Interlibrary Loan.
