Find Standards
The Reg Erhardt Library subscribes to numerous industrial standards, recommended practices and specification manuals.
Standards are located on the main floor (Level 1) in the Standards section of Reference collection. You can search the
library catalogue
to find the standard you need by searching the full name of the organization followed by the word “standards”.
For example, if you want SAE standards search for phrase “society of automotive engineers standards”.
These standards are broadly used by many different trades and include national standards for specific products.
- American National Standards Institute – ANSI:
a private, nonprofit organization in the United States administrating and coordinating voluntary standardization and conformity assessment systems.
- American Society for Testing and Materials – ASTM: standards that are internationally used by scientists, engineers, architects and government agencies for research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions worldwide.
- Canadian Gas Association – CGA: no longer publishes codes and standards or is involved in appliance certification. CGA sold its standards and certification business to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The B-149 codes, appliance standards and natural gas appliance testing and certification services are now published by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
- Canadian General Standards Board – CGSB: standards and specifications developed by committees and experts in their fields covering a wide range of products and services used by Canadian businesses and industries.
- Canadian Standards Association – CSA: standards developed to meet the needs of business, industry, government and consumers throughout Canada.
These standards are specifically designed for the automotive industry.
- Society of Automotive Engineers – SAE
The “SAE Handbook,” is a three volume set of motor vehicle standards, recommended practices, information reports and related technical reports
These standards are heavily used by the construction industry.
Building
- American Concrete Institute – ACI
Standards developed to improve the design, construction, maintenance and repair of concrete structures
- American Institute of Steel Construction – AISC
Standards developed for the structural steel design and construction industry in the United States. The Reg Erhardt Library subscribes to the “Manual of Structural Steel Construction”
- Alberta Roofing Contractors Association – ARCA
The ARCA’s “Manual on Good Roofing Practice and Accepted Roofing Systems” is recognized throughout Alberta by industrial and commercial roofing associations
- Canadian Painting Contractors’ Architectural Manual – CPCA
The “CPCA Painting Specification Manual” is used by Canadian architects, engineers, interior designers, specification writers, and government agencies, paint contractors, coating inspectors, paint manufacturers and suppliers
- Canadian Roofing Contractors’ Association – CRCA
The “CRCA Roofing Specification Manual’ is used by architects, building consultants, contractors and building manufacturers throughout Canada
- Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute Standards – CRSI
The “CRSI Manual of Standard Practice” contains up to date information about recommended industry practices for estimating, detailing, fabricating and placing reinforced steel for concrete construction
- Glass Association of North America – GANA
This association is vital to insuring glass continues to be extensively used in construction, automotive and specialty applications. This standard manual explains how.
- Iron and Steel Society – ISS
The ISS supported the advancement and development of iron and steel making practices. In January of 2004, they merged with the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers and formed the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST). The Reg Erhardt Library’s collection currently includes standards from the ISS collection.
- Terrazzo, Tile and Marble Association of Canada – TTMAC
Standards developed for the tile and stone industry in Canada
- Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada – ULC
Standards developed by Canadian manufacturers, inspection authorities and the general public who are focused on product safety testing and certification of products ranging from home appliances, firefighting equipment, plumbing and ultrasound equipment
Air conditioning
- American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers – ASHRAE
A series of standards, and recommended practices designed to promote and develop uniform testing methods related to the installation of equipment for heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning engineers
These standards are specifically designed for the electrical and electronics industries.
- Electronic Industries Alliance – EIA
American industry standards and publications for electronics, telecommunications and Internet security
- Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – IEEE
Standards that deal with major topics, such as telecommunications, information technology and power generation for traditional and emerging electrical and electronic industries
- Illuminating Engineers Society – IES
Technical resources and standards for lighting design, lighting safety, and lighting education
These standards are developed for the petroleum industries.
- American Petroleum Institute – API
Standards and recommended practices covering the production material, lubricants and certification programs for storage tanks, pressure vessels and pipe inspection for the petroleum industry
Health and Public Safety
The standards are used by medical professionals, safety inspectors and public health officials.
- American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine – AIUM
Standards containing the latest information and knowledge in the field of ultrasound in medicine
- National Fire Protection Association – NFPA
Codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other related risks
- Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada – ULC
Standards developed by Canadian manufacturers, inspection authorities and the general public focused on product safety testing and certification of products ranging from home appliances, firefighting equipment, plumbing and ultrasound equipment
These industrial standards are used by members of the manufacturing and automation industries.
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers – ASME
Standards developed for manufacturers, installers, insurers, inspectors, end users, distributors and regulatory agencies
- American Welding Standards – AWS
Standards promoting the best practices and developments in welding and allied processes, including joining, brazing, soldering, cutting and thermal spray
- Instrument Society of America – ISA
Standards for automation, security safety batch control, control valves, fieldbus, environmental conditions measurement and symbols
- International Organization for Standardization – ISO
These standards establish common international standardization for materials used in the manufacture and supply of products, in testing and analysis, in terminology and in the provision of services that are used by industrial, international and business sectors worldwide
